How to use AIM (AOL Instant Messager)
Disclaimer: I do not own nor am I affiliated with AIM or AOL. This tutorial is just to help out individuals learn how to use the AIM program. I am making no profit for this tutorial. Also, as you can see, I have no graphics skills, heh.
This tutorial is very image-heavy!
Step 1: Creating a Screen name.
A. In order to chat you are going to need to create a screenname Go to http://www.aim.com. Click on the blue link “Get a Screen Name” in the top right corner.

B. This will bring you to a new page. Make sure you have “create a new account” chosen. Click “Continue.”

C. Fill out the nice long form they give you. Try to make the username something unique but one you will be able to remember.

And you’re done! You should get this page confirming your new name:

You will also get an e-mail confirmation. Make sure you click on the link inside the e-mail so that your username works properly.

Congrats, you have an AIM screen name!
Now that you have a name, you get to decide how you want to get into chat. There are two ways you can use AIM: You can download the program or you can use the program through their website, known as AIM Express. First, let’s go over how to download the program:
A. Go back to the main page. Click on “Downloads.”

B. This will bring you to a page where you will decide what version of AIM you want to use. You are going to have to choose either 6.5 or 5.9. I personally prefer 5.9, so the tutorial screencaps will look like the 5.9 version. The directions also work the same for 6.5 though! So, pick your poison.

From here, you will download the installation piece. Once you have done that, locate it on your desktop and open it.

You should now see this prompt. Click “Run.” And follow the steps:

Now that you have installed the program, it will ask if you have a screen name. Enter the screen name you created earlier. The AIM start up box will now appear for you to enter your screen name and password.

It will log you in and you will see your buddy list. (Yours will be empty.) You can minimize this box at anytime and it will go into your taskbar.

And you’re done installing!
AIM Express
If you do not want to download the AIM program but still want to chat, you can use the website’s AIM Express feature:
Go to the http://www.aim.com and click on AIM.com. Under that list, choose “AIM Express.”

This will bring you to a new page. Simply enter your screen name and password. Your buddy list should pop up. (Make sure you have all pop-up blockers off.)

And that’s it!
Chatting
Now that you know how to use AIM, I’m sure you want to know how to get into chat! This is easy. First you IM one of the mods that is currently online. (You may wish to add them to your buddy list so that you can see when they are available.)

The moderator will then invite you into the chat. You will receive a dialogue box that looks like this:

Click “Accept” and the chat room will open for you. Chat away and have fun!

For mac users:
1. Follow the steps of signing up for an account on http://www.aim.com 2. Once an account has been created, go to http://www.adiumx.com and download the Adium client 3. Try not to squee too hard over the adorable flapping duck. XD
I hope this tutorial was helpful to you. If you have any questions, you are welcome to comment in this post and I will try to help you at the best of my ability. I look forward to seeing all of you in the chat! |
